Storyteller’s Creed

I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge.

That myth is more potent than history.

That dreams are more powerful than facts.

That hope always triumphs over experience.

That laughter is the only cure for grief.

And I believe that love is stronger than death.

Who is Phil Jinkus?

Exactly what I would like to know, and I felt the question -- being the most important question of life, at least right now -- deserved the privilege of being a post title.
Anyway, the real purpose of this post is to give you an excerpt. It's an excerpt from Amarilda, the third book in Cricket's Fire, and sadly, I can't tell you much about it. I'll let it speak for itself.
Keep in mind that by the time you read this, you will have read Evermore, so it might make more sense.

A pitch black sky enveloped everything like a suffocating blanket. There were no clouds, and stars should have dotted the perfectly dark heavens, but no pinpricks of light appeared.
Jade Messenger picked his way along the dark cliffs. Something kept nagging at the back of his mind -- the feeling that he was looking for something. Jade shrugged it off.
Why was he here? What was he doing?
            What was he looking for?
Jade stopped and turned. Nothing but dark, craggy peaks as far as the eye could see.
An unexpected fear gripped him. There was something wrong here. He could not tell what, but something was terribly wrong.
Jade didn’t know what made him do it, but he did it anyway. He ran straight toward the edge of the cliff and leapt out into thin air.
The cliffs melted away into wispy tendrils of smoke that Jade tried to grasp. Instead, they formed into new surroundings -- a cityscape, with buildings on every side of him. He stood on the roof of one of these tall skyscrapers.
An urgency took hold of Jade. He walked toward the edge of the building and looked down. He considered leaping off of here as well, but before he could, the roof beneath him gave way. Jade went crashing down through the building. Every floor gave way, but at the end, instead of everything melting away, he found himself on the bottom floor of the building. The place looked familiar…in fact, he thought he might have…
            No, never mind.
Jade took a step toward the door, then changed his mind, taking several steps backward.
            “Cricket?” he called.
Who is Cricket? thought Jade, surprised at the betrayal of his own voice.
“Cricket!” he shouted again. “Cricket, where are you?”
Jade spun around. He was looking for a Cricket?
“Robert! Tal!” Jade yelled, still not certain who he was talking about.
How could he know these people were if he didn’t even know who he was?

That's all I have. If you have any theories, please feel free to post them in the comment line! (About the excerpt, or about Phil, if you feel up to it.) All for now, peeps! Don't trust Phil should you happen to meet him on a dark road one stormy night, and should he happen to smile and hand you a Twinkie.
I shudder to think what might happen if you ate that Twinkie.

  2. Yes, it is. The series is called "Cricket's Fire". The first book is "Sunset, Oregon", the second book will be "Evermore", and the third book is "Amarilda".
If you have any more questions, just ask!
